Feeding horses just oats…?

I am moving my horse to a new farm. The women there feeds the horses oats, and then adds “not just oats” to it, to make up for the vitamins. I have always fed him complete feed – basically what the barn was feeding. He has been on 10% pellet for most of his life. Is it bad to switch him to oats?
I am gradually going to mix the oats in – thank you!!
Just wondering what the deal with oats was. I researched it a little, but wanted more help..

If you abruptly change his food you are taking a chance on giving him colic. When you change feed you need to do it gradually. Mix a small amount of the new feed in with the old gradually cutting back on the old and adding more of the new until you have made the transformation to the new feed. You could also tell the woman that you would like to continue what you have been feeding and not have to go to the trouble. Good luck
