Hayfever – Hayfever Learning Centre by Jawad Amjad

Hayfever – Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
Hayfever is the common term for an allergic reaction that takes place at certain times of the year upon exposure to pollen and fungal spores (not hay!). Hay fever is a common condition that affects 2 to 3 million people in Britain every year. In a recent study conducted it has been confirmed that the overall quality of life is significantly impaired in subjects with allergic rhinitis affecting peoples daily lives, but can be drastically improved by treatment. According to the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECHS), it was found that 21% of the population suffer with allergic rhinitis, but this figure could be higher as a lot of people do not consult their doctor regarding their hay fever, but are treating themselves with over the counter treatments.

The first step in knowing whether you have hay fever is to know what hay fever is exactly and to understand the regulating mechanisms behind the hay fever symptoms.
What is Hay Fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. Hayfever is triggered when microscopic pollen particles come into contact with the cells in the nose, mouth and eyes of an allergic person. The allergic reaction happens when the body’s immune system mistakes the pollen for a harmful substance, and tries to defend itself, by releasing antibodies known as Immunoglobulin E (IgE) cells that attack the pollen to rid of them from the body. This causes special chemicals such as Histamine (which can be counteracted with Anti-histamines) to be released; and it is the histamine which causes the allergic symptoms .

Allergic Rhinitus can be classified into 2 groups, seasonal (hay fever) and Perennial Rhinitus. Hay fever is caused by specific pollens or moulds which are released at certain times of the year, whereas Perennial Rhinitus can be caused by a wide range of allergens that produce the same symptoms, commonly house dust. Often people who suffer from hay fever can also be allergic to a range of other allergens too.

Pollens are among the most allergenic of substances and hay fever can have a dramatic impact on severe sufferers lives. You are more likely to get hay fever if there is a prevalence of it in your family, and usually affects people between the ages of 20 – 40. It can interfere with exam results, has a detrimental effect in the work place, through days off sick, and impairs interaction with colleagues through drippy noses and sneezing. Hay fever affects driving and other demanding tasks, either by its symptoms or reduced reflexes due to medication. However, with perseverance, it is possible to control your hay fever effectively, by finding the right medication or by experimenting with a range of solutions.

What is pollen?
Pollen comes from all plant life and is the male part of the flower. Pollens come in various shapes and sizes, depending on the plant species, the average size being 0.05 mm across. Pollen grains contain a large number of proteins, which cause the allergic reaction. The worst pollens for hay fever sufferers are those that are carried by the wind, not those that are carried by insects. This is because vast numbers of them have to be released into the air to combat wastage, whereas the ones distributed by insects are hand delivered directly to their target.

Pollens fall into 3 families, grasses, trees, and herbaceous plants. The common plants associated with hayfever symptoms are as follows:

Grasses

Trees

Herbaceous plants

Couch grass

Birch

Ambrosia

Rye grass

Maple

Golden rod

Fescue

Alder

Nettle

Reeds

Hazel

Plantain

Meadow grass

Beech

Artemisia

Rye

Elm

Sheep sorrel

Meadow fox tail

Willow

Poplar

The Pollen Season
The Pollen Season
If you have hayfever, you may be allergic to only one type of pollen, or several of them. In the UK 95% of people are allergic to grass pollen. The grass pollen season can start as early as may, and not finish until mid August, peaking in late June, early July.

The second most common allergen is Birch pollen, affecting about 25% of hay fever sufferers. The birch season is April. But some trees such as hazel, elm and alder release their pollens as early as January due to the climate change.

Allergy to the pollen from weeds such as nettles is also extremely common, and the season for this can span from April to mid-September.

For most hay fever sufferers the suffering lasts a few weeks, but for unlucky people who are sensitive to a range of pollens it can last for many months.

Hayfever Diagnosis
Hay fever can be diagnosed quite easily; the symptoms and the family history can usually determine whether you have this condition. There are several ways to test for hayfever, the most common being prick skin testing, intradermal skin test, blood testing and patch skin testing to just to mention a few. Most of these tests need to be conducted at a doctors office. Allergymatters can provide Allergy Tests for use at home, which can test your levels of IgE allergy antibodies in a similar way to hospital allergy tests.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of hay fever include a tender, itchy, runny nose accompanied by sneezing and coughing. The sinuses may also begin to swell up, which causes the Eustachian (tube that connects the ear to throat) tube to be blocked, causing stuffiness. Hay fever leads to itchy, watery eyes leading to redness and swelling of the eyes forming dark circles under the eyes. Mucus may drip from the sinus into the throat, which causes the throat to become sore and may also leading to sneezing. Itchiness may also persist deep in the ears, throat and nose. Hayfever can also make conditions such as asthma worse, and bring on a bout of wheezing.

A lot of the symptoms are commonly associated with other allergy conditions such as Dust mite, Asthma, Mould Allergy and Eczema.

Tips for Prevention

There are several steps you can take to minimise the symptoms of Seasonal Rhinitus, or hay fever. Some of the most common preventative methods are:

How To Groom Your Horse

A horse make-over should be a daily event! This ensures that you form a close bond with your horse as well as keeping the horse healthy. You could even spot potential health problems early enough to avoid claiming on your horse insurance, simply by taking your time with the horse grooming process. Grooming a horse should present no problems. What follows are the eight simple steps that will allow you to groom your horse every day in a relaxed way.
Horse Grooming is Easy!
Below is a list of items you will need in order to give your horse a proper grooming.

Rubber Curry Most rubber curries are either circular or oval.. its “teeth” are made of soft rubber
Dandy Brush. You will have to buy a stiff bristled brush.
Body Brush. Another essential item is a soft bristled brush usually made of horsehair.
Hoof Pick/Brush. You will need a hoof pick and brush combo. You can purchase this grooming tool at most tack stores.
Mane Comb. The preferred material for mane combs is plastic. The risk of damage to the hairs of the horse’s mane is reduced if you use a plastic mane comb.
Towel. This is necessary. This helps remove sweat marks and gives the coat a nice shine after you finish brushing the horse.
The grooming sequence.
1. Steady as she goes. Begin grooming your horse from the top of the horse’s neck, then work your way down to the horse’s rear. Then, change sides and do the same.
2. Attach the horse. To tie your horse safely make use of a leather halter or ‘quick-release’ snaps on cross-ties.
3. The rubber curry. Moving the rubber curry in a circular motion will loosen any dirt lying under the horse’s hair. Remember to be very careful and gentle around bony areas of your horse’s body (back or shoulders). If you can use a rubber curry with extreme gentleness, it can be used on your horse’s legs; otherwise avoid its use. You must also make sure that you don’t use a rubber curry or stiff bristled brush on your horse’s face. Using a rubber curry or stiff bristled brush on the horse’s face could cause a serious eye injury that will require immediate veterinary attention, and probably a claim on your horse insurance policy.
4. The dandy brush. Just as you would sweep a floor so you use the same motion when using this brush. By tapping the brush away and up from the coat you will ensure that no dirt remains on the coat. Each stroke should produce a small cloud of dust. Unless you remove the dirt from the brush after each stroke you will merely be shoving the dirt back under the hair, a process that will irritate the horse’s skin. Think about mopping the floor to help you remember. You need to change the water; if you don’t, you will be ‘washing’ the floor with dirty water.
5. The body brush. The purpose of the body brush is to smooth down the hair and to get rid of any traces of leftover dirt after you have given the horse a complete brushing using the dandy brush. With the body brush, you do not have to constantly tap the brush after each complete stroke. As opposed to this, you should flatten the horse’s hair by smoothing it flat over its coat. These brushes give the horse’s coat a glossy, sparkling clean look. To get the full benefit of grooming it is essential that you use the tools in the correct sequence.
6. Mane comb. Combing the horse’s mane requires a very gentle touch. The horse’s tail should be brushed with the dandy brush.Using the comb to brush your horse’s tail is not recommended; it can damage the hair. If you want the horse to grow a long, flowing tail, you should use the dandy brush instead or do not brush the tail at all. To avoid this, try rinsing the tail with warm water and then applying a tail conditioner or show sheen; this will prevent knots and tangles.
7. Caring for your horse’s feet. During grooming you mustn’t forget to gently squeeze his fetlock (ankle) after running your hand down his leg. Be sure not to pick up the horse’s foot too high because this could cause him to lose balance. Use the hoof pick to scrape the dirt off the hoof, but remember you need to scrape the dirt away from you, just as you would if you were using a potato peeler. Injury to you and your horse could be caused by the horse suddenly moving or withdrawing his foot. The hollow areas on both sides of the hoof and surrounding the bottom of the foot must be thoroughly cleaned out.
8. The last stage is that of wiping down the entire horse with a plain towel or suitable rag. This will bring out the shine on the horse’s coat.
The grooming process is now complete. Now you have successfully given your horse a professional grooming. Remember: a groomed horse is a clean horse, a clean horse is a happy horse and a happy horse is a healthy horse!
The best care possible for your horse is ensured by finding a good horse insurance policy. Take some time to compare horse insurance providers before committing to a purchase. By making a careful comparison you will be able to choose the most appropriate one for you and your horse.

How to handle horses with optimum safety!

<!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } A:link { so-language: zxx } TT.cjk { font-family: “DejaVu Sans”, monospace } –>

If you are looking forward to buy a horse or you already owe one, treating them safely is a pressing concern. Neither horse nor the rider should be hurt due to negligence, oversight and carelessness. Therefore, one should be aware about all the general safety options. These are important not because of the regular injuries but to avoid those unexpected accidents.

This article will comprise all the aspects of treating horses with safety measures,so that you only have fun and happiness while riding. No matter what breed of horse you have purchased, safety tips goes same for all.

Horse clothing – The horsemen should first find a suitable attire before handling the horse. Never be barefoot while treating the horse. Feet is the most important part to be protected, as the horse can make frequent moves. If the horse mistakingly step on your foot it can result into broken bones and abrasions. Wear hard strong boots or rugged shoes.

Any kind of accessories or jewelery can also create problems. Rings and bracelets can catch the lead line if there there is a sudden jerk, so avoid wearing any fancy stuff.

Understanding the nature of the horse- To have complete control over the horse it is important to understand the maneuvers around horses so that there are less chances of injury.

Vocal communication is essential to deal with horses, however, they will not understand the exact spoken words. All you need to is to reveal emotions through the voice tone. For instance,a snarling gesture will let the horse know you are angry. While appreciating or complimenting the horses, make sure you talk in a enthusiastic manner. Words do not deliver the exact meaning but the horses get to know about your mood.

A friendly training environment- For complete control over the horse, owner should offer them reward each time. A soothing behavior can bring them closer to you. With time you can develop a bond of trust with the animal. The horse will then identify you as the leader and will follow your consistently.

So, these are some consideration which can help in treating the horse in a best possible way. If you look forward for a brand new horse, purchasing them online is the best option. Websites have horses for sale and range ofhorse classifieds, so that buyer’s can have the best deal.

What things do you need for a horse?

I’m hoping to get a horse soon. I need to figure out all the things I’ll need for it so its comfortable.

I have a list already but I’m not sure if I’ve covered everything. I already have a wheel barrow and pitch fork along with many shovels.

Here’s my list:
Grooming supplies- Brushes, shampoo, conditioner and fly spray
Fly mask (Is this a need?)
Buckets
Halter
Lead rope
Hay (What kind is best for horses?)
Feed
Blanket
Tack- saddle, bridle, reins,saddle pad.
Barn

I live in North Carolina so its hot and humid, would a horse really need a blanket? I was thinking about getting a light one for the winter. Would that be ok?

I’ve got an equine vet already. Also I have all the clothing I’ll need for one; boots, jeans- all of it!

The list is literally never ending…

A Farrier
An Equine Dentist (or you can use your vet)
A first aid kit- horses are always getting into trouble. You can make your own. I just bought a fairly large tool box and filled it with wound cleaner, beta-dine, cotton wraps, latex gloves, electrolytes, vet wrap, a thermometer, a stethoscope, neosporine, and tons more.
Supplements (from hooves to coat they have one for it all)
Wormer
Sawdust
Mats (for in the stall- they make mucking’ stalls so easy and horses appreciate standing on them)
Truck
Horse Trailer
That’s most of the big things you need…
Now for riding your horse.
Saddle
Saddle Pad
Bridle
girth
lunge line
mounting block (depends on you and your horse)
spurs (again depends)
a trainer (depends)

It goes on. There are so many things that you need. But if you have the basics, you can just grab more things as you go along. No, i would say your horse won’t be needing a blanket. I don’t know what winters are like there- I live in NE Ohio where its -5 on some days in winter. But if you want your horse to have a blanket on in the cold that’s perfectly fine. And for fly masks, horses appreciate them. They aren’t a need, just a way of keeping flys off of your horse’s face in bad fly weather.
Grass hay is a good hay for horses, or if you can find a grass hay mixed with alfalfa. Talk to your vet about any questions. Even ask them to sit down with you and figure out what your horse’s nutritional requirements are. It will take into consideration what your horse’s size is, how active it is and how many pounds of feed it should be getting.
Good luck
